A Beautiful Thing
At a dinner table in Bethany, a woman did something outrageous; she shattered a flask of precious perfume, worth a year’s wages, and poured it over Jesus. Her act was immediate, unmeasured, and extravagant. The room was filled with fragrance and criticism. “Why this waste?” they asked.
But Jesus didn’t rebuke her. He honored her. “She has done a beautiful thing for me.”
Mark 14:1–11 paints two stark portraits: Mary, who found Jesus beautiful and gave all she had, and Judas, who found Jesus useful and sold Him for silver. The contrast is deliberate. Sandwiched between the treacherous plotting of the religious leaders and the tragic betrayal by Judas is a woman whose devotion would be remembered forever. And Jesus made sure of that.
Mary’s act was not practical; it was prophetic. She anointed Jesus for burial, not knowing fully what lay ahead but sensing the moment called for everything she could give. While others were calculating, she was worshiping.
Our culture often praises measured devotion, don’t go too far, don’t sacrifice too much. But Jesus is worthy of our unreserved love. He calls us to break open the flask, to surrender what’s costly, and to follow Him with hearts that are all-in.
Judas reminds us that proximity to Jesus is not the same as love for Jesus. He walked with Jesus, listened to Him, served with Him, and still chose to trade Him for silver. Mary, by contrast, offered something that could not be bought. She gave herself.
At Calvary Baptist, we carry hope, build intentional relationships, and pursue Jesus. This passage calls us to ask: Do I love Him for who He is or for what I think He might give me? Is my life a reflection of extravagant love or calculated religion?
Jesus doesn’t forget our devotion. What Mary did has echoed across generations. And the same is true for us. When we give what we can, our time, our treasure, our very lives. He sees it as beautiful.
Let’s be a church marked by costly worship, not comfortable proximity.
“She has done what she could.” May that be said of us.
