A Future and a Hope

My family loves Chinese cuisine and after every meal we crack open the mediocre tasting cookie to share a laugh together. Are we the only family that adds the “in the bathroom” tag at the end of every prediction? Perhaps that is too much information, but trust me it will create chuckles around the table. 

Those small rolls of paper offer some prediction of your future; and while they are not intended to be taken seriously, they cause us to consider what our future may look like. I’m not inferring the other family game of, “What would you do with $1,000,000 if you had to spend it in a day?” I’m actually challenging you to consider an eternal future.

Beautifully, God offers a gift of hope and a glimpse into what our future can look like if we put our trust in Him. Matthew 5:3 is a familiar verse and the beginning of what is commonly called the “Beatitudes.” The challenge to be “poor in spirit” is not to be confused with physical poverty. Instead it speaks to an idea of spiritual bankruptcy. 

When I reach the end of my rope and acknowledge that I deserve the wrath of God, eternal separation from Him in Hell, and am broken, I then can see the hope that He offers by the shed blood of Jesus. Truth be told, we stand on solid ground when we have reached the end of our rope. And, the security of your future will cost all you have.

Romans 10:9 tells us, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” This confession of Lordship acknowledges that I have a debt that I cannot pay and only Christ can make me whole again.
