We all love receiving a gift, and when it is an unexpected surprise we are blown away. This may be the toy that everyone thought was sold out. This may be the surprise visit from a deployed warrior who unexpectedly walks in the door or the diamond ring that is given on one knee. No matter the surprise, it is so much fun!

What is more fun is being the one to give the gift? All the planning and coordination that has gone into the purchase or the reveal is bubbling up inside. It is not because we want to gain attention, but we are overwhelmed with expectations as to how the recipient will react. I must confess I typically blow a gasket and give the surprise early because I just can’t stand it anymore.
What is the most amazing surprise gift we could give is something we already have? We have been given the gift of life. In fact, Ephesians 2:8-9 specifically calls it a gift. John 3:16 describes the gift from God as Jesus. All this Christmas season we have been celebrating the best gift of all.
The really unique nature of this gift is that it is one that is to be passed on to others. Am I talking about a re-gift? Well in a way. You actually get to keep this gift as you also re-gift, so it is a little different. While there is no perfect analogy, the point is that we can learn a lot from the angels who obeyed God’s command and proclaimed a message of Jesus. When we day, it may be that our friends and loved ones who hear the message respond like the shepherds, who searched for Jesus with curiosity.
Our joyful mission is to share with others the gift of life in Jesus. This is not simply something that we do during December. Every day and in every relationship we are urged to point others to Jesus. This starts with how we love and care and continues as we share the name of Christ.
Like the planned surprise gift, don’t wait for a special day. Let today be the moment you burst with excitement and share the best gift of all. We can’t wait to see the reaction of the one whose life is changed by the power of Jesus.
