We are so glad you’re here! Our AWANA club exists to provide a fun, safe, and encouraging environment for your children to learn and grow in their love for Jesus. We do this through large group lessons, small group book time, and games. And lots of FUN! This packet will give you all the information you need to know to get started in AWANA. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any of our Leaders. We love your children and are excited to help them learn and grow this year. 

Weekly club nights are from 6:30 to 8:00pm on Wednesdays. In the case of any cancellations, we will post that information on Calvary Baptist Church’s social media channels, as well as send an email out to parents.

3-4 year old Boys and Girls

Cubbies must be 3 years old by September 1st and fully potty trained.

Our Cubbies work through 2 handbooks, 1 each year on a 2 year rotation. This year we will be in Appleseed. All Cubbies start the year with the Apple Acres Entrance Booklet, and then move on to the Appleseed Book. Each week, parents should read the appropriate Bear Hug section with their child and help them study the verse for the week. Each Bear Hug also has optional Under the Apple Tree activities that further review the material. 

Cubbies earn patches for their uniforms by completing their Bear Hug sections. The book is designed for all clubbers to be on the same section each week, so if you miss a week, simply jump ahead to the appropriate Bear Hug. Each week, our large group lesson, puppet skit, and craft all reinforce the truths you read in that section during the week. You are always welcome to go back and review missed sections. Our Leaders are happy to work with clubbers who want to catch up! 

Book Awards are handed out at our special end-of-year Awards Night.

Cubbies have a snack each week during club, so it is important to advise us of any allergies your child has. Please see a Cubbies Leader about signing up to bring a snack during the club year. (Prepackaged snacks are a great option.) All snacks must be peanut free. Thank you!

K-2nd Grade

Our Sparks club runs a bit differently than the other age groups. Sparks work through their handbooks at their own pace. Some kids work diligently on one or two sections a week, others move rather quickly and are able to complete book reviews and extra credit sections. All new Sparkies begin with the Flight 3:16 entrance booklet, which teaches John 3:16. After the entrance booklet is completed, Sparkies move on to the following books:

  • Book 1: Hang Glider (green)
  • Book 2: Wing Runner (blue)
  • Book 3: Sky Stormer (red)

These books use Bible lessons, verse memorization, and activities to teach Gospel Truths from Genesis to Revelation. As Sparkies progress through the books they will complete and earn the Rank Emblem, 4 Green Jewels, and 4 Red Jewels in each book.

All new Sparkies start with Hang Glider, regardless of their grade level. Sparkies cannot progress to Wing Runner until they are in 1st grade, or Sky Stormer until they enter 2nd grade. If a clubber finishes their book early, he is encouraged to review the book to earn the review patch. After he completes his book review, your clubber will either progress to the next book if he is in the appropriate grade, or work on extra-credit Frequent Flyer Cards.

If Sparkies want to complete their book in one year, he should aim to complete at least 2 sections each week. We encourage parents to help their child study at home; Leaders also review verses during club before clubbers recite them for credit. Sparkies earn patches and jewels that are displayed on their uniform. The handbooks give guidance for where to place these awards; if you ever have a question about award placement, please ask a Leader! Book Awards are handed out at the end of the year Awards Ceremony

3rd – 5th Grade

Our T&T club trains 3rd through 5th graders to begin the habit of personal Bible study and digging into God’s Word for themselves. The T&T books are designed for the clubbers to read Scripture on their own and answer questions as they read. In addition to completing the Bible study pages each week, clubbers recite one memory verse and one review verse each week. Review sections at the end of each unit (4 units each year) help cement these truths and unite the verses together in each unit’s theme.

There are 4 T&T books, and we rotate through one book a year for 3 years. This year will be Grace In Action. Clubbers have the option of continuing to work through the 4th book on their own in their 6th grade year to earn the Timothy Award. All T&T clubbers work through the same book, regardless of grade level. If you miss a week or join us late, simply jump in with the current lesson for the week. Clubbers are always able to catch up and work on previous missed sections on their own, but please do not work ahead.

Patches are awarded after every 4 sections passed. Book awards are handed out at the end of the year during our Awards Ceremony. Starting in 3rd grade, book awards are cumulative and based on how many books the clubber has completed:

  • 1 Book- Alpha Award
  • 2 Books- Excellence Award
  • 3 Books- Challenge Award
  • 4 Books- Timothy Award

Clubbers also earn extra patches during the year for extra credit work in the book and special challenges. We encourage clubbers to decorate their uniforms with their earned patches however they would like!

Frequently Asked Questions

AWANA stands for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15), and for over 50 years AWANA has been reaching boys and girls with the Gospel of Christ. In fact, several of our Leaders were clubbers when they were children! The AWANA ministry uses a series of age-appropriate handbooks to teach kids about Jesus and encourage them in a program of Bible memory and activities. As kids memorize Bible verses and complete their sections, they earn patches and awards that decorate their uniforms. These emblems reinforce their hard work and encourage children to hide God’s Word in their hearts. 

Through the year, we encourage you–parents, grandparents, guardians, neighbors–to work with your clubber to help them memorize verses and complete their sections. We also reinforce Bible truths during large group lessons and through small group study time. If your child has a hard time memorizing verses, that’s OKAY! We are here to encourage and help your child, and cheer them on as they grow in their faith. 

AWANA is divided up into clubs based on age and grade. At Calvary, our clubs are: 

  • CUBBIES – 3 and 4 year olds
  • SPARKS – Kindergarten through 2nd grade
  • T&T (Truth and Training) – 3rd through 5th grade

(all clubs based on age/grade by September 1st of this year)

Club starts at 6:30pm. We ask that parents drop off their child in their classrooms no earlier than 6:15pm, as leaders are still getting their rooms ready for clubbers before 6:15pm. 

All clubbers must be signed in at Hightower Hall and receive a name tag. Parents and guardians, you will receive a matching tag that will allow you to pick up your child after club. Please bring this tag with you when you pick up your clubber. Our Leaders want to maintain a safe environment and will check tags before releasing clubbers – even if we know you! Please encourage your child to wear his/her name tag and uniform each week at club. Both of these help us quickly identify your child and which group they belong to. 

Clubbers are dropped off and picked up in their classrooms. We ask that all parents walk their child to their classroom. If someone else is picking up your child, they will need the matching tag that you receive at check-in. It’s a good idea to also let your child’s AWANA Leaders know so they can anticipate who will be picking up your child. 

Each week, please make sure your clubber brings their handbook and wears their uniform to club. Sparks and T&T should also bring their own Bibles, as we read straight from God’s Word in our lesson time.

Each club rotates through the following activities during club nights: 

Large Group Time: Kids encounter the Gospel each week through songs, Bible lessons, and activities. 

Small Group Time: Clubbers review sections that they have studied in their handbooks at home and recite these to their leaders. 

Game Time: Each club has an opportunity to play lively, age-appropriate games. This time is always a favorite! (Please have clubbers wear closed-toe shoes for game time).

Note: Cubbies and Sparks also get snack time during the evening. Parents, please see your Cubbies or Sparks leader about signing up for snacks during the year. All snacks brought in must be peanut free. Thank you!

Registration fees cover the costs of handbooks, uniforms, awards, and Special Night activities. During the year, we also have special Offering Nights to raise money for a missions project that is special to Calvary Kids, Sleep In Heavenly Peace.

All clubbers must have uniforms in order to receive patches, jewels, and emblems. We encourage all clubbers to wear their uniforms each week to club- this helps Leaders quickly identify which group your child belongs in, and encourages a spirit of community among our clubbers. If your child is just starting in a new club- a rising Kindergartener just starting Sparks, for example- we encourage you to select a uniform that is a bit large to accommodate your growing child over the next few years.
