Before Everything, God
Every great story begins by introducing its main character. The Bible is no different.
When many people think about Genesis, they immediately think about creation, Adam and Eve, or debates about the age of the earth. While those conversations have their place, Genesis begins somewhere much more important. Before Moses tells us about the world, he introduces us to the One who made it.
“In the beginning, God…”
Those four words establish the foundation for everything that follows in Scripture. Before there was time, space, light, or life, God already existed. He was not created. He was not competing with other gods. He simply is. For the original audience, the people of Israel preparing to enter the Promised Land, this truth was life-changing. They had lived for generations surrounded by cultures that worshiped the sun, the moon, rivers, animals, and kings. Genesis declares that none of those things are worthy of worship because they are all created by the one true God.
Genesis 1:2 also reminds us that God is not intimidated by what appears chaotic or unfinished. Before creation was filled with life and beauty, it was “without form and void.” Yet God’s Spirit was already present, hovering over the waters and preparing for what was to come. Throughout Scripture, we see this same pattern. God brings order from disorder, hope from despair, and life from what seems lifeless.
That truth encourages us today. There are seasons when our lives feel uncertain or incomplete. Relationships may be strained. The future may seem unclear. We may wonder what God is doing. Genesis reminds us that God is often at work long before we can see the finished picture. He is never absent, and He always completes what He begins.
As Calvary Baptist Church begins our journey through Genesis, we invite you to slow down with us. These opening chapters are not just ancient history. They are the foundation of the entire Bible. They teach us who God is, who we are, why the world is broken, and why we desperately need Jesus.
Our prayer is that this series will deepen your confidence in God’s Word, strengthen your faith, and help you see the unified story of Scripture from creation to new creation. Before we understand ourselves, we must first know the God who was there in the beginning. Everything else flows from Him.
