Sermon Notes
I. Worship in Rest
Exodus 35:1-3
Moses assembled all the congregation of the people of Israel and said to them, “These are the things that the Lord has commanded you to do. Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. You shall kindle no fire in all your dwelling places on the Sabbath day.”
II. Work in Cheerful Obedience
Exodus 35:4-9
Moses said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. Take from among you a contribution to the Lord. Whoever is of a generous heart, let him bring the Lord’s contribution: gold, silver, and bronze; blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen; goats’ hair, tanned rams’ skins, and goatskins; acacia wood, oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, and onyx stones and stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece.
Exodus 35:29
All the men and women, the people of Israel, whose heart moved them to bring anything for the work that the Lord had commanded by Moses to be done brought it as a freewill offering to the Lord.
Exodus 36:6-7
“The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.” So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, “Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing, for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more.
God’s People Eagerly Give to the Work of God.
God’s People Joyfully Obey the Word of God.
III. Walk in His Blessing
Exodus 39:32-43
According to all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so the people of Israel had done all the work. And Moses saw all the work, and behold, they had done it; as the Lord had commanded, so had they done it. Then Moses blessed them.
There is blessing on the other side of idolatry, failure, sin, and shame, and that blessing is only on the other side of the work of Christ.
Next Steps
- I confess and repent of my sin to trust Jesus as my Savior and King
- I choose to rest in the blessing of who God declares me to be and not in what I do or possess
- I commit to practice rhythms of rest and hard work.
Deep Dive
- How has God shown you grace for eternity and in everyday situations?
- Read Exodus 36:6-7 and consider why we don’t have this “problem” in the American church.
- What is your normal weekly rhythm of rest, and how should it be changed?
Springboard
- As we come to the end of Exodus, what has changed in your view of God and yourself?
- Read Exodus 40:34-38. At the end of Exodus, what the people of Israel get from God is God. How do the events of Exodus teach us to value the presence of God in our lives?
- We conclude the book of Exodus with this expectation: the living God is present with us and will be at work among us. What areas do you see God at work in your life, and how can you join Him?
