Can I rest if I never slow down?

After a long day on a trip to New York City I checked my watch for steps taken and decided to journal with this photo after walking over 12 miles in one day. It was a long and exhausting day, however I was so refreshed by the memories made on my journey. In fact, I woke up the next day and did it all over again.

Oftentimes we are searching for rest and poorly define it as inactivity. Don’t get me wrong, I love to sleep and do nothing at times. In fact we are commanded to do this by God. I do think we allow this desire to lead to misconceptions on Godly rest, and even Sabbath rest.

God rested on the seventh day of creation to mark His completion and fulfillment. He continues in that rest today. This does not equal inactivity. He does not slumber. He doesn’t even nap. Psalm 121:4 teaches us this. His rest is found in His fulfillment, and that is where we can find soul level rest as well.

Step off the rat race pace for a moment and breathe. Even if your calendar stays jam packed and the stress of life remains, you can experience peace and quiet. Our rest is found in the peace of God when we find peace with God. This peace is only found in a relationship with Him as we are reconciled to God through Jesus.

This rest cannot be taken away. This rest cannot be purchased or acquired. It is a gift from God. Breathe in that truth today and walk in confidence over fear. Can you rest if you never slow down? Yes, but you might need to physically take a nap!
