Christ Alone: Carry Burdens

Pastor Ricky Smith

Sermon Notes

I. Pick Others Up When They Fall

Galatians 6:1
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

Rather than writing people off, strive to restore them.

II. Help Carry the Load

Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

III. Take Care of Your Business

Galatians 6:3-5
For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load.

Avoid becoming a burden by being humble in your own business.

2 Corinthians 1:12
For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.

Next Steps

  • I confess my sin and turn to Jesus as my King for the first time.
  • I choose to restore others rather than write them off.
  • I commit to taking responsibility for my actions with humility.

Deep Dive

  1. How do we reconcile Jesus’ command to not judge in Matthew 7:1 with Paul’s challenge in Galatians 6:1 to confront sin?
  2. What are some examples of carrying others’ burdens? What keeps us from doing this?
  3. What are the differences between “burdens” in Galatians 6:2 and “loads” in 6:5?

Springboard

  1. Why do people think the church always talks about money? Is this a legitimate problem?
  2. How has God blessed you in your life?
  3. Share a time when you gave to meet someone’s physical needs. How did you feel?
