COLUMBUS, GA. – On Saturday, August 4th, the people of Calvary Baptist Church will gather at the river to celebrate those who have chosen to follow Jesus with River Baptism. We will be at the Phenix City Amphitheater from 11AM to noon and want to invite the community to join us.
For centuries, Christians have used local rivers to gather and celebrate. They have used the local watering hole as a place to gather and share a common faith. The river has been used to express the change that takes place in a person’s life when he or she enters into Christian faith.
When Jesus entered the public forum, he did so by first going to the river. He came to a local group which was engaged in the practice of baptism and identified with them through the water. The practice of water baptism has been a vital part of the Christian faith since its beginning.
Lead Pastor Jeff Struecker is excited about doing baptisms in the river. “We’re doing baptism in the Chattahoochee River because we want our community to see a public miracle,” said Struecker. “Every baptism is a public demonstration of the miracle of rebirth that Jesus does inside someone’s soul. Calvary Baptist Church invites you to see people make the miracle of their rebirth public this Saturday.”
In the 110 year history of Calvary Baptist Church, the highest number of people we have baptized in any one month is 15. We already have 22 people planning to be baptized in the river, making August 2018 the largest single month of baptism in our history.
We invite you to join us on the banks of the Chattahoochee to share in the community of believers on this day of celebration.
