Covenant, Not Contract

In a world that often treats marriage as temporary and transactional, Jesus offers a radically different vision. In Mark 10:1–12, He is confronted by the Pharisees with a question about divorce. But rather than debating loopholes in the law, Jesus redirects the conversation to the heart—and to the beginning.

Jesus reminds us that marriage is not a human invention. It’s a divine design. “From the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’” And then He quotes Genesis: “A man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This union is sacred. It’s more than a social contract—it’s a spiritual covenant meant to reflect the faithful, unbreakable love of God.

Yes, the Bible acknowledges that divorce exists because of sin—because of what Jesus calls “hardness of heart.” But that’s not the ideal. Jesus calls us to more than cultural norms or legal minimums. He calls us to God’s heart—a heart of faithfulness, sacrifice, and covenant.

At Calvary, we want to be a church that honors this vision. That means celebrating marriage as a good gift from God. It means discipling couples to grow in unity and grace. It also means walking with those who have experienced the pain of brokenness, offering the healing hope of Jesus.

Whether you’re single, married, divorced, or remarried—God’s grace is for you. Jesus is the perfect Bridegroom who never abandons His bride. He invites us into a relationship that’s not based on performance, but on promise. And that covenant is secure forever.
