From Shame to Freedom: Breaking Addiction’s Grip

I know firsthand the reality of addiction. The power of its stronghold is very real and all-consuming. I’ve justified my behavior to feed addiction and knew in the moment it was wrong, but I could not restrain my need to satisfy the urge. For me, it was pornography. For you, it could be gluttony, shopping, alcohol, drugs, or sex. The list is limitless, truthfully. Can you relate?

When in the throws of addiction, I was overcome with shame and guilt but caught in the spiral and cycle. Sound familiar? Reflecting back on that season, the Enemy would work to keep me consumed by shame and even doubt God’s love for me or His ability to forgive me. Sound familiar? I would have thoughts like, “Why would God give me another chance?” or “If I were really a Christian, I wouldn’t keep doing this.”

This journey lasted for years until I truly experienced freedom. It took me understanding God’s love and ability to forgive. It also took other people stepping into my life and holding me accountable. It was the first time in my life I had a battle buddy. It felt like what we read in Mark 2:1-12 of friends who knew the need of a person and made sure he got to Jesus.

I want to encourage you today. Freedom and forgiveness from addiction are possible. Forgiveness is free, and freedom will require work and support from others. Know that Jesus has the power to heal and can change your mind and actions. It will require faith and obedience on your part. Rather than wallowing in your shame, walk in the freedom Jesus makes available to you!
