From Dust to Clay
Pastor Ricky Smith

Sermon Notes

Genesis 2:7
Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

I. You are Dust

Your worth was never sitting inside you waiting to be earned. It was given from outside, and nothing you do or fail to do can take it back.

II. You are Breath

Your worth was never something you were going to build. It was given, and it’s never once depended on your performance since.

III. You Are Formed by the Potter

Your worth is defined by what God was willing to pay for you.

Next Steps

  • I confess I am looking to find my worth in what I can earn.
  • I choose to trust that God’s version of me today is not the finished product.
  • I confess my sin and turn to Jesus as King for the first time.

Deep Dive

  1. Read Psalm 103:13-14. How does knowing God remembers “we are dust” shape the patience we show to ourselves and to others?
  2. Read 1 Corinthians 15:42-49 and discuss the contrast between the first Adam and the Last Adam.
  3. Read Isaiah 64:6-8. Where in your life right now do you need to trust God is still shaping you that than treating your current state as the finished product?

Springboard

  1. Read Genesis 2:8-14. Make a simple list of everything God does for Adam in these verses before Adam does anything for God. What does that order, gift before task, suggest about how God relates to you?
  2. Where in your life right now do you find yourself trying to earn a welcome, a place, or a love that might already have been freely given to you?
  3. Think of one boundary or limit in your life right now that actually protects something good. How does that change the way you think about boundaries?
