He is Seated
Psalm 110:1 may be short, but it is not small: “The LORD says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’”
This verse opens a window into heaven. God the Father speaks to God the Son, declaring the authority, victory, and reign of Jesus Christ. David, Israel’s great king, calls the Messiah “my Lord.” That means Jesus is more than David’s descendant. He is David’s King. He is not merely a teacher, example, or spiritual helper. He is Lord.
The New Testament returns to Psalm 110:1 again and again because it helps us see Jesus clearly. Jesus quoted it to show that the Christ is greater than anyone expected. Peter preached it at Pentecost to declare that the crucified and risen Jesus has been made both Lord and Christ. Hebrews points to it to remind us that Jesus is seated at the right hand of God, having completed the work of salvation.
That little word “sit” is full of hope.
Jesus is not pacing heaven in panic. He is not wondering how history will unfold. He is seated. He reigns with authority, and the Father has promised that every enemy will be placed under His feet.
We live in the tension of the “already” and the “not yet.” Jesus already reigns, but we do not yet see every enemy fully subdued. Sin still hurts. Grief still comes. Families still ache. Death still visits. But Psalm 110:1 reminds us not to confuse delay with defeat. Christ is seated, and His victory is certain.
Psalm 110 also points us to Jesus as our forever Priest. Hebrews 7 tells us that He “always lives to make intercession” for His people. The King at God’s right hand is not distant from us. He is our Savior, Advocate, and Priest. He brings sinners near to God through His finished work.
So how should we respond?
We bow, because Jesus is Lord. We rest, because His sacrifice is enough. We hope, because every enemy will fall beneath His feet. And we go, because our seated King has sent His church to carry hope, build intentional relationships, pursue Jesus, and make disciples.
Jesus is not waiting to become King.
He is seated.
And He is worthy.
