Sermon

Matthew 28:18-20
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…

What teaching is not:

1. Teaching is not just confined to the pulpit

2. Teaching is not just a lecture

3. Teaching is not just a formal agreement

What teaching is:

1. Teaching = a journey

2. Teaching = lifestyle

1 Timothy 4:11-16
11 Command and teach these things. 12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

3. Teaching = making disciple making disciples

Genesis 1:28
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Discussion Questions

  1. Who would you say has had the biggest impact on the way you live?  Why?
  2. On a scale of 1-5 rate your maturity in the faith right now?  Explain your answer.
  3. Read Matthew 23:13-15.  How could someone become a convert (disciple) of hell?
  4. Does God give us spiritual authority to teach others?  How do we use that spiritual authority?
  5. The goal of multiplicity means that you are reproducing yourself in someone else, who in turn reproduces themselves in someone.  Who is someone you have multiplied yourself through?  How well are they doing at multiplying themselves in someone else?
  6. Has Jesus brought to mind someone of whom you want to make a disciple?  Share the first name with the group.  Pray for these people by name.
