Kairos Moments
When one door closes, another one opens. You are likely familiar with this phrase and have experienced moments when you thought life was going in one direction and a pivot occurred and reality changed. This can be positive or negative. Perhaps you thought one college was right for you but ended up another was God’s plan. Perhaps you thought one marriage was right but divorce forced a change. From jobs to relationships, we often work to navigate what is best and wise.
This same analogy is often applied to the hard work of discerning God’s will for our life. We strive to make the best choices and decisions for ourselves and our families. In fact, I have said to myself, “I will walk through this door until God closes it”. The heart of that statement is the ultimate trust in God’s sovereign plan.
Acts 6:6-10 describes a similar situation. Paul had an itinerary for his missionary journey but God spoke to him directly and changed course. When his plan revealed a closed door and he walked through the new open door it led to a chain of events that ultimately planted the church in Philippi and became the backdrop for the letter that we are beginning to study as a church.
These moments can potentially happen every day in our lives. In fact, at Calvary, we call these “kairos” moments, moments in time that are impregnated with God-ordained mission. The challenge is that we learn to hear God speak and have the humility to lay aside our plan and follow the leadership of the Spirit’s voice.
