Little Things
Little things matter! I opened a letter a few weeks ago that someone mailed to me. Truthfully it was out of the blue. This person has never mailed a card to me. It may be part of their ministry and they write cards to people all the time. But this was the first time they sent one to me. Little did they know that the simple words of encouragement and affirmation were exactly what I needed at that time. Little things matter!
This season of life and ministry has been exceptionally stressful and challenging for a number of reasons. I’m not seeking sympathy. In fact, everyone I talk to shares a similar story. Unique times create unique challenges and frankly bring reminders of our dependency on God and the need for community in the body of Christ.
It’s not a quantum leap to make a parallel to the Israelites exodus from Egypt. They were in a very unique situation and each had a physical manifestation of God leading them. While they walked exactly where God led them, they still encountered crises, enemies, and challenges.
It is amazing to reflect on God’s faithfulness to provide ways of deliverance in those moments. At times He broke the laws of physics and split the waters in two. Other times He uses the least likely of people. A prostitute, named Rahab, was in the right place at the right time. She didn’t knock the walls down. In fact, she did something very simple. She helped some spies hide.
There is so much that could be unpacked, but for today this stands as a simple reminder that the little things we do play a part in God’s bigger plan. It isn’t for us to know how the end of the story reveals itself. It is simply for us to listen and obey what God tells us to do.
If God impresses on you to write a note, don’t ignore it. You may be used to giving the one word of encouragement that a brother or sister needs on a given day. If God impressed you to pray for someone, stop and pray right then. Like we read in Colossians 1:9, your intercessions may support someone to find discernment in a decision. Little things make a big difference as a big God graciously invites us to be on mission with Him.
