Love Notes

We are blessed with two amazing daughters. God has truly answered prayers as they have matured into God-fearing young women. Looking back on their earlier years, I recall moments of separation anxiety, especially when they first started school.  My thoughtful wife took the time to write creative notes with fun art and Scripture references. Every day we would place one of these notes in their lunch box so that when they sat to eat they would have a visual reminder of God’s promise to them.  

Some days more assurance was needed. With tenderness, mom would write a smiley face on their hand so that when they were afraid they could look at the ink on their hand and be reminded of a mom and dad who loved them and were proud of their courage. 

As I reflect on these small moments, I am reminded of God’s grace and patience to us.  Even though He has gone through great lengths to demonstrate His love and faithfulness, we still doubt.  He sent His Son. He provides a rainbow, a sunrise, and daily provision. But often we still need more.

At our core the fear has less to do with His ability or even doubting His ability but instead a poor theological perspective that relies on our goodness to maintain our security.  1 John 4:13-14 is one of many references in the Bible that affirm our security is based in the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.  

We are not saved by our own deeds. In fact, Colossians 2:8-9 emphatically states the opposite.  And beyond God’s gift of Jesus, we are sealed with a promise through the continuing work of the Spirit. His presence in our life convicts, corrects, and unites us in community with His church.  As He faithfully works we are recipients of affirmation that we are His.

This empowers us to know that He is our God, and we are kept in His power and for His glory.  If you find yourself doubting today, beware of trusting in your own ability. Instead look to the promises of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life as a reminder of whose you are.
