Nearer Than You Realize
Have you ever walked through a season where your heart felt heavy and your prayers felt unanswered? Maybe you were not running from God in rebellion. Maybe you were simply discouraged. That is exactly where we find the two disciples in Mark 16:12-13 and Luke 24:13-35.
They were walking away from Jerusalem, weighed down by confusion and disappointment. They had hoped Jesus would redeem Israel, but the cross had shattered their expectations. What they did not realize was that the risen Jesus was already walking beside them.
That is one of the great encouragements of this resurrection account. Jesus does not only pursue rebellious people. He also pursues weary, disoriented, disappointed disciples. He draws near to them on the road and begins to open the Scriptures. Before He opens their eyes, He opens the Word. Before they fully recognize His face, He helps them understand God’s plan.
Luke tells us that Jesus explained how Moses and all the Prophets pointed to Him. The cross was not an accident. The suffering of Christ was not a tragic detour. It was necessary. Jesus had to suffer for sinners, bear the weight of our sin, die in our place, and rise again in victory. The resurrection was not merely proof that Jesus was alive. It was confirmation that His saving work was complete.
As Jesus opened the Scriptures, the disciples later said, “Did not our hearts burn within us?” That is what happens when the living Christ is revealed through the written Word. Cold hearts begin to warm. Confused minds begin to clear. Weak faith begins to strengthen.
Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him. Everything changed. The men who had been walking away from hope now ran back to Jerusalem to tell the others that Jesus was alive.
This is the hope of the gospel for us today. Jesus still meets people on the road of disappointment. He still opens the Scriptures. He still turns doubters into witnesses. He still takes those who are drifting and redirects them by His grace.
Maybe you are in an Emmaus season right now. Maybe your heart is tired, your expectations are broken, and your faith feels foggy. Take heart. Jesus may be nearer than you realize. Open His Word. Look again to the crucified and risen Christ. He is alive, and because He is alive, hope is alive too.
