Origin Stories

If you could be any superhero, who would it be? For me, that is an easy answer. BATMAN! He has always been my favorite superhero. “Batman Begins” was produced by Warner Bros. in 2005 and quickly became my favorite superhero origin story. With enough money and courage, I could be Batman! Alright, take a deep breath and slow down Ricky.

I’m coming back to reality, but do want to reflect a moment on an origin story. It really does make a difference when you consider where you came from. In fact, I recently took a stroll down ancestry lane and explored my family heritage. I learned where my Native American influence came from and even that I am related to the first-ever King of Scotland. How cool is that?!

While understanding an origin story of a fictional character might be entertaining, and even better identifying my ancestry origin may give me a deeper appreciation of who I am, neither of these really change how I live my life today. There is a deeper and more significant origin story we must understand and consider.

Ephesians 2:1-3 describes my state of sin that is part of my origin story. God created man for relationship and in the perfection of the Garden enjoyed walking with Adam and Eve. When they gave into temptation and broke God’s rules is resulted in separation from God and infected all men for all time with this problem of sin and separation

This is part of my origin story and yours. This sin that separates me from God also results in death! Romans 6:23 teaches us this truth. While this part of our story is dark and deadly, it doesn’t end there.

Ephesians 2:4 begins with two amazing words, “But God!” Even in my sin, God showed my grace. He gave me what I don’t deserve. While I deserve death and separation from God, He offers me life and hope. This peace and relationship with God are only made possible because Jesus came to this earth, died on my behalf, and rose from the dead.

As we walk through this Easter season, we must reflect on our origin story and stand thankful for the grace that God has offered to us. If you have never stepped into this life of hope and peace, I invite you to click this link to discover how your life could change forever!
