You can run a home experiment with a lit candle covered with a glass jar. Science teaches us that oxygen is required for a flame to burn, and it will choke out without air. In many ways, oxygen is hope. As we compare this experiment to our lives, we feel choked out by situations and, at times, our sin. Sometimes, we can blame others, and sometimes, we can only blame ourselves. Do you find yourself in a hopeless situation? Are you at rock bottom?

While painful, this is actually the place we find the most hope. When you hit rock bottom, the only place you can look is up! It may be that your circumstances have sucked the life out of you but Jesus is ready to give you purpose and meaning no matter your situation.
Jonah seemingly reached the place of near death while in the belly of the fish or the great sea monster. In his desperation, he recalled the sovereignty of God and cried out to Him. His prayer records an acknowledgment of God’s faithfulness, patience, and mercy. While Jonah never clearly says he is sorry, only time will tell the genuineness of his repentance. No matter, we see in the moment a vivid reminder that God hears and answers our prayers.
How do you relate? If you find yourself in a rock bottom moment, look up. Trust that God hears you, He sees you, and He offers hope for you. Repent and turn to Him for your today and tomorrow. Perhaps an honest prayer like that of Jonah in Jonah 2 will help you find purpose in your pain. Reach out to Him right now!
