Path of Greatness

Everyone wants to be great. Our culture celebrates greatness through trophies, titles, and social media followers. But Jesus turns that idea upside down. In Mark 9:30–50, He shows us that true greatness in God’s kingdom is found not in power or recognition, but in humility, holiness, and peace.

When the disciples argued about who was the greatest, Jesus sat them down and said, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” Then He took a child into His arms. In that culture, children had no social status—they were overlooked. By welcoming a child, Jesus revealed that greatness is measured not by how many people serve you but by how many people you serve. True greatness is humble service.

At the heart of all of this is the gospel. Jesus Himself walked the path of true greatness—not by climbing higher but by stooping lower. He humbled Himself, took the form of a servant, bore our sins on the cross, and rose again to give us life. Greatness in the kingdom isn’t something you achieve. It’s something you receive when you trust in Christ and follow His way.

So what does true greatness look like for us today? It looks like washing dishes when no one notices. It looks like resisting temptation and cutting off sinful habits. It looks like choosing peace over conflict, forgiveness over bitterness, and unity over division.

At Calvary, we want to be a church known for this kind of greatness—serving the vulnerable, pursuing holiness, and carrying hope into our community. This is the way of Jesus. This is the way of true greatness.
