Sermon Notes
Matthew 6:12
and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
I. Recognize Our Need
Romans 3:23-24
23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
II. Regenerated People Still Sin
John 13:10
One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean.
Romans 6:1-2a
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Corinthians 5:17-18
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;
My position in Christ must impact how I treat people
III. Reconciled People Forgive
Matthew 6:12
and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Matthew 6:14-15
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses
Ephesians 4:32

Forgiven people ought to forgive.
Jonah 4:11
Should I not be concerned about Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?
Next Steps
- I confess my need to put my trust in Jesus and be set free from sin for the first time.
- I confess I have been unwilling to forgive others and commit to change.
- I choose to walk with confidence as a forgiven person and not carry the guilt of the past.
Deep Dive
- Read Matthew 6:12 and discuss how our sin and actions compare to a debt.
- How does a forgiven sin debt impact our view of God, self, and others?
- Why are we sometimes unwilling to forgive others when we have been wronged?
Springboard
- Think about times in your life when you have faced trials and temptations. What are some differences between ones leading to sin and ones leading to character?
- Read 1 Corinthians 10:13-15. What does this tell us about temptation?
- What do you think the purpose of temptation or trials in our life? Why would God lead us into them? See Matthew 6:13
