Psalm 37:1-11
Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! Cease from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land. In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there. But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.
I. Stop Fretting: God’s Justice Is On the Way
You are not responsible for the verdict. You are responsible for your faithfulness.
II. Start Trusting: God’s Provision Is Already In Motion
1: Trust in the LORD, and do good
2: Dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness
3: Delight yourself in the LORD
4: Commit your way to the LORD
You are not strong enough to carry what you are carrying. Stop pretending you are. Roll it to God.
5: Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him
III. Keep Waiting: God’s Inheritance Is Guaranteed
Matthew 5:5
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Next Steps
- I confess my sin and turn to Jesus as King for the first time.
- I confess that unchecked worry or prolonged anger are controlling me more than the Holy Spirit.
- I choose to daily submit to God’s control to practice meekness this week.
Deep Dive
- Read Matthew 5:3-10. What does it mean for your daily life that the inheritance is already secured in Christ?
- Can you think of a time when prolonged anger over a legitimate injustice began to produce something destructive in you or in a relationship? What would it have looked like to release that to God’s justice instead?
- Read 1 Peter 5:6-7. What is one practical step you can take this week to cast a specific anxiety onto God rather than carrying it yourself?
Springboards
- Psalm 42 begins with the image of a deer panting for water. What are some ways people try to satisfy soul-thirst apart from God?
- The psalmist talks to his own soul in verses 5 and 11. What is the difference between listening to yourself and preaching truth to yourself?
- Read Lamentations 3:21-24. How does “calling to mind” God’s steadfast love help us fight despair?
