Sermon Notes

I. Share Christ’s Suffering

1 Peter 4:12-13
12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.

What Are the Benefits to Suffering?
1. Expose Imperfections
2. Purge the Causal
3. Build Character

Suffering Strengthens Our Relationship with Christ and Our Community

II. Stand Up, Be Proud

1 Peter 4:14-16
14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or an evildoer or as a meddler. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.

When Jesus Rubs Off on You, You Will Rub People the Wrong Way

III. Start the Work in Me

1 Peter 4:17-19
17 For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?” 19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

Our Suffering Is Meant to Prove Our Faith and Be Reminded of His Presence

Next Steps

  • I recognize my need to put my trust in Jesus as Savior and King.
  • I choose to trust God to purify me as I walk through trials.
  • I commit to intentionally encourage others who are in a trial.

Deep Dive

  1. Read Proverbs 27:21 and share how God has used fiery trials in your life to purify and mature you.
  2. 1 Peter 4:14-16 suggests that people will insult us for our faith. How has your faith offended someone and what joy should you find in that?
  3. Why is it difficult to trust God will use the trials of life to grow us? How have you questioned God in those moments?

Springboards

  1. In our study of 1 Peter, it is clear that suffering is a part of Christian living. Read Luke 22:31-34. How do you think this experience impacted Peter? How do you think you would respond?
  2. Read Philippians 2:3-8. What do these verses tell us about humility? How is Jesus our example of humility?
  3. How do you think our worries and anxieties are connected to our understanding of humility? Are they related?
  4. Read Ephesians 6:10-12, how do you see this spiritual fighting in your life or family? How does this impact your daily routine?
