Spiritual Battles Call for Spiritual Weapons

Have you ever tried to exhaust a bonfire with a water gun? Of course not! Doing such would be a helpless adventure. I must confess that I enjoy playing with fire, and I have enjoyed my fair share of water gun fights. However, the two aren’t meant for one another. We must recognize the spiritual battle we are engaged in and choose to utilize proper weapons that will combat the Enemy. 

Desperate Times

Culture is shifting around us at a rapid pace. Influenced by postmodern philosophy, truth is being redefined by many and interpreted as being relative to every situation. What once was considered concrete is now considered fluid. We live in such desperate times that it sometimes seems that sin is rampant and unchecked. Romans 5:12 teaches us that “where sin abounds, grace will much more abound”.

Desperate Measures

The grace that God promises will communicate hope to a world that desperately desires to experience peace and purpose. His grace will also give us the endurance to withstand growing persecution. But how should God’s people respond to shifting culture and normalized sin? 

Acts 12 provides an example for us to follow. When the church was persecuted and Peter was in prison, God’s people began to pray with intensity and regularity. They did not just pray one time and go about their day. The text implies that they prayed day after day and chose to engage in a spiritual battle with a spiritual weapon. 

We can and should follow this example and commit to being people of prayer. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Being desperate doesn’t always mean you’re in a situation of despair. It can also relate to an attitude of dependence on God for strength, guidance, and power. If we walk in this posture, we can experience moments of victory and celebration as God goes before us and keeps His promises.
