Squirrel!

I admit it. I am easily distracted. Sometimes I feel like the dog in “UP”. I’m engaged in a conversation or a task then all of a sudden, “SQUIRREL!.” Who’s with me? I know that many of you can relate. In some ways this is a gift, because I can manage a lot at one time, but it is a curse because I struggle to focus when I want to, or know I need too.

Perhaps this is one reason why I love theater. The scurry of the crowd to their seats and the murmur of the crowd can quickly be hushed with the power of light. The house lights go out and one spotlight will shine on the stage. Immediately the crowd will hush and all eyes will focus on the light to see what will soon step into its beam. In fact, all through the show, the theatrics will use the power of light to draw the audience’s attention to focus on key moments or characters. In fact, sometimes it is to divert your attention so that a prop can be moved without you noticing.

We are easily distracted in life. What if there was a theatrical spotlight in our life to help us focus. What if I told you that there is! His name is Jesus! Follow this thought. When we look at Hebrews 2:5-9, the writer of Hebrews is continuing with a thought to push against the believers to fall to the prevailing thought that Jesus was just a good Rabbi, and not all that different from angels. No! Jesus is more. Jesus is better.

To shine a spotlight on this truth, the writer of Hebrews uses Scripture. He points them back to Psalm 8 and comments on a familiar and cultural passage, for the purpose of shining a light on Jesus. He is above all, over all, sovereign, and our King.

All of us, as followers of Christ, would validate this statement of faith. However, when we assess our everyday life we are distracted by the noise and chasing the squirrel that appears. A key tactic to maintain focus on the spotlight of Jesus is to follow the example in Hebrews 2:5-9.

Clarity on the Word of God can help us to hold focus on Christ. Through His Word, He speaks to us, reveals Himself to us, and reinforces our identity in Him. He defines us!

Be encouraged today and confess His sovereign reign as King. Commit today to walk with Him by exercising the discipline to open His Word daily in study. Take the time to write down in your journal daily, what He is teaching you. Make an effort to memorize a verse every week. 

Through this careful discipline we can better avoid the temptation to chase the random distraction and rest in our Deliverer, who has conquered death and our sin dilemma by rescuing us. Keep our focus on Him, no matter what.
