Standing Firm as His Pillars

A pillar is an image of strength and a key architectural component of the ancient Greco-Roman world. More than identifying Doric and Corinthian columns, there is a beautiful metaphor related to God’s promise to His Bride in Revelation 3:10-13. The Church at Philadelphia was focused on being a light in a dark world and was honored for being a Great Commission church.

The specific promise of God to them was that they would be a pillar to the world. On a recent trip to Turkey, I noticed the engineering of ancient columns. Certainly, some were monolithic, but most were built in segments and held together with metal. This engineering design gives a visual of God’s promise and a picture of the church.

We are one body made of many parts and are held together by Christ. Reinforced by Paul in 1 Corinthians 12-14, we see the beauty of linking arms and sharing Jesus in our city and with the nations. May we be more focused than ever on Jesus and committed to fulfilling the Great Commission. He is coming soon, and many of our local neighbors and tribes around the world need to hear about the hope we have found in Him. Let’s carry hope today and every day!
