Stay Awake

We live in a world of constant alerts: weather warnings, breaking news, emergency drills. But after a while, we get numb to it all. The danger? When a real threat comes, we may not be ready.

In Mark 13, Jesus gives His disciples a spiritual warning: deception, persecution, and tribulation are coming. It’s not a scare tactic, it’s a loving preparation. Jesus doesn’t sugarcoat the future; He prepares us to endure it by staying awake and rooted in Him.

He begins by warning of deception. “See that no one leads you astray,” He says in Mark 13:5. In a world full of false teachers, emotional spirituality, and cultural confusion, we must be anchored in God’s Word. If we don’t know the truth, we’ll fall for anything.

Then, Jesus prepares His disciples for persecution. “You will be hated by all for my name’s sake” – Mark 13:13. That’s not easy to hear, but it’s real. Following Jesus has always required courage. The good news? The Holy Spirit will give us words, strength, and peace when we need it most.

Finally, He warns of tribulation, a season of intense pressure and suffering. And yet, even in the darkest hour, Jesus is sovereign. He shortens the days for the sake of the elect. He tells us all this in advance—not so we panic, but so we trustHim.

At Calvary, we carry hope into a chaotic world by standing firm in the truth of Christ. We build intentional relationships that help each other endure. We pursue Jesus, even when the cost is high. And we make disciples who are spiritually alert, not spiritually asleep.

The call today is simple: stay awake. Don’t be led astray. Don’t give up. Jesus told us what to expect so we wouldn’t be surprised, and so we’d cling to Him when the world feels like it’s falling apart.

When deception multiplies and pressure mounts, remember: the One who warned us is also the One who walks with us. And He never fails.
