The Co-Mission: Hearing the Call and Stepping In

At Calvary Baptist Church, we believe the Christian life is not just about what we believe, but how we live on mission with Jesus. In Mark 16:14–20, we see a powerful reminder that the Great Commission is not a solo assignment. It is a co-mission. Jesus sends us, but He also goes with us.

What makes this mission urgent is that we are surrounded by four distinct calls.

First, there is the call from within. Every believer has been given the Holy Spirit, who stirs our hearts with conviction and compassion. When you feel that nudge to speak up, to pray for someone, or to share your story, that is not random. That is God working inside you, calling you to participate in His mission. Christianity was never meant to be passive. It is a Spirit-filled life on the move.

Second, there is the cry from beneath. In Luke 16, Jesus tells of a man in torment who begs for someone to warn his family. It is a sobering picture of eternity. People matter. Souls matter. And the reality of eternity should shape how we live today. If we truly believe the gospel is the difference between life and death, we cannot remain silent.

Third, there is the command from above. Jesus, risen and reigning, says, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel.” This is not a suggestion. It is a command rooted in His authority. Yet it also comes with a promise: He is with us. We are not carrying this mission alone. Jesus is actively working through His people to advance His kingdom on earth.

Lastly, there is a call from without. Demonstrated by the Macedonians in Acts 16 who cried for the Apostles to come and help, we live in a culture that is increasingly searching for truth and authentic faith. They are desperate for hope and we have the answer!

So what does this mean for us?

It means we stop waiting for the “right moment” and start living with intentionality. It means we prioritize people over preferences and souls over systems. It means we see our neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools as mission fields.

Most importantly, it means we say “yes” to Jesus.

The Great Commission is not just for pastors or missionaries. It is for every believer. And as we step into it, we do so with confidence, knowing that the same Jesus who commands us also empowers us.

Let’s be a church that hears the call from within, the cry from beneath, the cry from without, and the command from above, and responds with bold obedience.
