The Fear of the Unforgivable
Many in our culture gravitate to entertainment that creates fear. TV shows, movies, haunted houses, and more foster fear. Beyond entertainment, what about fear of Hell, separation from God, or consequences for actions? Some of us carry doubt and fear about God and His Word. For me, I spent years growing up in fear of what I didn’t understand and what others communicated with confidence, but based on conjecture.
In Mark 3:22-30, we discover the concept of “the unpardonable sin,” and to any spiritually sensitive person, this strikes terror and fear. It is like hearing the words “Antichrist,” “false prophet,” “great tribulation,” or “lake of fire.” They all serve as striking reminders that sin is real and judgment is sure. It honestly creates questions that we must strive to answer and understand: Is there really an unforgivable or unpardonable sin? If there is, what exactly is it? Also, can a Christian commit this sin?
Rest assured that God forgives all sin, and this is why Jesus died on a cross for you and me! We have hope and peace through His death, burial, and resurrection. Rather than walking in fear of what may be, commit to doing the hard work of study in pursuit of Jesus and the truth that is promised in His Word and can be discovered in Him. Dig deep, and in doing so, you may remove some fear and walk in truth. Know this, you can be forgiven today of any sin because of Jesus’ love and mercy.
