The God of the Living

At Calvary Baptist Church, we believe that Scripture isn’t just a book of the past—it speaks directly to the present and gives us hope for the future. In this week’s message from Mark 12:18–27, Jesus faces a theological trap set by the Sadducees, a religious group that denied the resurrection. Their question was a riddle about marriage in heaven, but Jesus turned it into a lesson on eternal truth.

The Sadducees were religious elites who only accepted the first five books of the Old Testament and dismissed anything supernatural—resurrection included. But Jesus didn’t just correct their logic; He exposed their spiritual blindness. “You are wrong,” He said, “because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.”

That warning still echoes today. It’s possible to know Bible facts and still miss the point. It’s possible to attend church, sing the songs, and recite the stories, and yet live without the resurrection power of Jesus. But if Christ is risen, that changes everything—not just for eternity, but for how we live right now.

Jesus went further. He reminded them that when God spoke to Moses, He didn’t say, “I was the God of Abraham,” but “I am the God of Abraham.” He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. That’s more than a grammar lesson—it’s a declaration of hope. Our God is present, powerful, and personal. If He is your God, then death is not the end of your story.

Resurrection isn’t a religious idea—it’s a living hope. Jesus isn’t just a teacher of truth; He is the Resurrection and the Life. And because He rose, those who trust in Him will rise, too.
