The Gospel According to Hollywood: Saving Private Ryan

Pre- Service Questions

What would you be willing to give up to help out a close friend in need?  What about a distant acquaintance?  What about a total stranger?

Can you love someone and not show it?  (In other words- if you say you love someone and don’t show it- do you really love them?)

Do you consider yourself a friend of God?  Would God call you his friend?

What did it cost Jesus to make it possible to be a friend of God?

Are we saved from our sin right now or are we saved from our sin when we stand before God in heaven?  (Explain your answer.)

Pray for each other- that our lives would demonstrate that Jesus is our Master.

Notes:

Saving Private Ryan

Romans 5:6-11

I. You are helpless over sin without Jesus. v.6-7

When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. 7 Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good.

II. You are now not guilty before God through the sacrifice of Jesus. v. 8-9

8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. 9 And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation.

III. You life should symbolize that you belong to Jesus v. 10-11

10 For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. 11 So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.
