In my travels I often love to walk in other churches and cathedrals. The architecture is breathtaking. The stone work, stained glass, and acoustics form an ethereal experience that is overwhelming. You may have walked through an ancient narthex and shared a similar sense of awe and wonder.
At the same time, I am often reminded of the distractions that can skew one’s perspective of religion. It is easy to see why some are led astray to view that the majesty of ceremony or the role of a priest can speak with authority. To be honest, the liturgy of high church can be healthy, so don’t misunderstand me. My point is that in most liturgical religions there is a dangerous misunderstanding of the priestly role.
For example, a visit to the Vatican in college left me stunned with beauty but hurting as I watched people line up for time with a priest in a confessional booth. We have a priest, and His name is Jesus!
He is the Great High Priest and fills that roll forever. He represents us, relates to us, and intercedes to God on our behalf. Hebrews speaks of this trait often and helps us better grasp Jesus as our Priest.
Jesus is one of a kind in His ordination and divine appointment Jesus is one of a kind in His Sympathy and ability to feel our pain. Jesus is unique in His Sacrifice that was offered once for all mankind and for all sin! Jesus is Superior in His Priesthood as He sits today interceding on our behalf!
I don’t go to a confessional but I do pray to a High Priest every day. His name is JESUS! I encourage you to do the same today, and every day!
