The Word Dwelt Among Us

At Christmas, we often say, “Jesus is the reason for the season.” But John 1:14–18 takes us deeper than seasonal sentiment. It reveals the heart of the gospel: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

That one sentence changes everything.

The word “dwelt” literally means “pitched a tent”—a nod to the tabernacle in the Old Testament where God’s glory dwelt among His people. But this time, there’s no curtain, no cloud. Jesus doesn’t come to visit. He comes to stay. He enters our world not as a distant deity but as God in the flesh. He moves into the neighborhood.

And why? To show us God.

John says we’ve seen His glory—glory full of grace and truth. This echoes Exodus 34, where God revealed Himself to Moses as “abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” Jesus is that promise fulfilled. He is God’s love and truth embodied, not in concept, but in a Person.

Even more stunning, John tells us we have received “grace upon grace” from Him. That’s grace stacked on grace. It never runs out. Like waves on the shore or a waterfall pouring over rocks, Christ’s grace keeps coming—forgiveness, restoration, strength, peace.

And here’s the best part: Jesus makes the invisible God visible. He “has made Him known.” If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. He is the radiance of God’s glory, the exact imprint of His nature. You don’t need to wonder what God thinks of you—Jesus shows you. He came for you.
