What We Reject
Have you ever noticed how God often works through the things the world overlooks?
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly chooses the unexpected. He chose a shepherd boy named David to become king. He chose fishermen to become apostles. Most remarkably, He chose a crucified Savior to become the hope of the world.
Psalm 118 reminds us of this beautiful truth through one of the most quoted passages in the New Testament:
“The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” (Psalm 118:22)
At first glance, this verse reflects God’s faithfulness to His chosen king. Yet Jesus revealed its deeper meaning when He applied it to Himself. The religious leaders rejected Him. The crowds eventually turned against Him. The Roman authorities condemned Him. The world looked at Jesus and saw someone unworthy.
But God had a different plan.
The very One humanity rejected became the cornerstone of salvation. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus became the foundation upon which every believer stands.
Psalm 118 begins and ends with the same declaration:
“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!”
That enduring love is the thread that runs throughout the entire psalm. God’s steadfast love sustains us in trouble, strengthens us when we are afraid, and reminds us that His purposes are never defeated.
Many of us know what it feels like to face disappointment, rejection, or uncertainty. We may wonder if God is still at work when circumstances seem difficult. Psalm 118 encourages us to trust that God is accomplishing something greater than we can see.
The cross looked like defeat on Friday.
The tomb looked like the end on Saturday.
But Sunday was coming.
The rejected stone became the cornerstone.
Because of Jesus, we can trust God’s faithfulness even when life does not unfold the way we expected. We can find refuge in Him rather than in our own strength. We can rejoice because our hope is built on a foundation that can never be shaken.
As a church family, may we continue to carry hope, build intentional relationships, pursue Jesus, and make disciples by pointing people to the only sure foundation: Jesus Christ.
No matter what you are facing today, remember this truth:
What people reject, God often uses to accomplish His greatest purposes. And nowhere is that more evident than in Jesus Christ.
