When Prayer Takes the Field

Teams are always inspiring. When a team prays together it is moving.  I realize the critical mind will question the sincerity of an athlete praying before a game.  I recognize that some players may be doing so out of routine, superstition, or even peer pressure.  No matter what, in that moment there is a recognition that God is over all and we can’t control everything.

Even more inspiring is when a church sincerely prays, humbles themselves before God, seeks the Lord together, and links arms on a Kingdom mission together. While not perfect in this regard, I am so grateful for Calvary Baptist Church. In our commitment to love God and our neighbor, we are intentional with one another as we pursue Jesus and carry hope to the world. 

This mission requires partnership, and thankfully, we are given human examples of loyalty, trust, and perseverance. Paul admonishes Timothy and Epaphroditus in Philippians 2:19-30 as individuals we can emulate. They were committed to God and to one another through the hardest of times.  In doing so, they forged a “battle buddy” friendship that stood the test of time.

Do you have similar relationships? If so, stop and thank God and thank them for their loyalty. If not, what can you begin doing now to cultivate this type of friendship? I suggest you commit to participating in a LifeGroup and also step out of your comfort zone to serve alongside others. These steps toward missional community will refine deep faith community over the long haul, building resilience and strength.
