When Religion Becomes a Lure
In every tackle box, there are dozens of lures—shiny, colorful fakes designed to tempt a fish into biting. They look real, but they’re empty. In Mark 7, Jesus confronts a similar reality among the Pharisees and scribes: a religious system packed with the lures of legalism—traditions that look holy but are hollow.
The religious leaders accused Jesus’ disciples of eating with “defiled” hands—not because they were dirty, but because they hadn’t followed ceremonial washing customs. These washings weren’t commanded by God but developed by man. And Jesus calls it out plainly: “These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me” (Mark 7:6). What a warning for us today.
It’s easy to rely on checklists—how we dress, how often we attend church, what causes we support—to measure our spiritual standing. But the gospel reminds us that true purity doesn’t come from outside-in conformity, but inside-out transformation. Defilement doesn’t come from food or customs; it comes from the heart. Pride, deceit, envy, and selfishness—all originate within us, not outside us.
That’s why Jesus is so radically different. He doesn’t merely address our habits; He confronts our hearts. He doesn’t clean our hands; He gives us new hearts. And in declaring all foods clean, Jesus dismantles the walls of ritual and builds a pathway of grace—for both Jew and Gentile—to come to God through faith, not tradition.
This isn’t just theology—it’s incredibly personal. Maybe you’ve grown up in church and are tempted to trust in your religious activity. Or maybe you’ve been judged by someone more concerned with outward appearance than inward change. The good news of Mark 7 is that Jesus sees through the charade. And He still offers grace.
The kingdom of God isn’t about eating or drinking—or even doing—it’s about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). That’s what our community at Calvary is about. Not ritual. Not performance. But real relationship with Jesus.
So this week, examine your heart. Ask the Lord to reveal any pride hiding behind religious routine. And remember: what can wash away your sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
